The local brains behind ongoing fundraising efforts for Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) are at it again for 2012. On Saturday, Jan. 14 from 5-8pm, a new event called the Shredd and Ragan Poker Prowl will serve as a secondary fundraiser that involves the community.

The premise is that there will be five participating bars: Madigan’s, Balloons, The Barn, EBC and the Gin Mill. Participants will start at the same bar, all of which will be offering food and drink specials, as well as a computer at each to track progress. When a participant buys something, they choose a card from the bartender’s deck, and that card is recorded into the computer. After stopping at all five establishments and choosing five cards to complete their hand, the line scoring computer system will help determine the winner.

According to Pat Morgan, Holiday Valley Terrain Park Manager and Youth Coordinator, “We have a great relationship with Shredd and Ragan from 103.3 the Edge [radio station]. They run a lot of dice runs, and have great computer software that will help us track progress of the event more efficiently. Ultimately, the start and finish will be at the same bar. We have Madigan’s in mind for that, but have yet to confirm this.”

The grand prize is a cruise, as well as a slew of product-sponsored packages from B4BC. The entry fee for each person is estimated to be around $20, with further details to be announced. There is no pre-registration required; this will be taken care of at the starting establishment.

“This was just one of those crazy brainstorming sessions over a conference call and the next thing you know we had conceptualized the idea. We’re excited to be able to involve the entire community and the businesses with this event,” said Morgan.

B4BC is a non-profit, youth-focused education, awareness, and fundraising foundation. Their mission is to increase awareness about breast cancer, the importance of early detection and the value of an active lifestyle. According to Morgan, “Holiday Valley is the largest resort fundraiser for B4BC in the country. A portion of the profits stay local and are donated to Camp Good Days to benefit the Women’s Oncology Program at Keuka Lake.”
