MUD, SWEAT ‘N GEARS

MSG offers a diverse line of hardgoods for both skiers and snowboarders. Can you get us caught up with some of the top picks for this season?
We have a lot of good stuff this year. Lucky for us, twelve skis that we currently have in stock were named in SKI Magazine as this year’s “Top Buys” ... with prices that won’t make you gag! And five of the ladies skis we carry were also recognized. We select skis that will perform well in all conditions - groomed snow, mixed snow and deep snow. Our picks would be the Rossignol Experience 88, which was our best selling ski last season. The addition of basalt to stiffen the ski and the patented air tip to lighten the ski will prove to be another homerun for Rossignol. The Blizzard Black Pearl, with a lightweight core and sturdy sidewalls, is a hands-down winner for women.
In snowboards, Ride has a new board shape called the “Helix” which uses an asymmetrical design that we’re really excited about. The heel side edge has a shorter turning radius than the toe side edge, giving you the most out of your turns. We’re focusing on the junior market as well, calling out the pint size Burton “After School Special” with pre mounted bindings. Just plug your kid in and go with a setup that’s easier than a tricycle with training wheels!
Same question, soft goods …
We like to think of the outerwear selection at Mud, Sweat n’ Gears as being thorough, functional and diverse as it needs to appeal to the most discerning customer. For men, we offer everything from technical, waterproof shell pieces to insulated pieces that are purpose built for typical resort use. For women, we like to think looking sleek and polished go hand-in-hand. We offer flattering, tailored, yet technical designs for women with bold tones and attention-getting prints. Who doesn’t love a puffy coat? Whether you wear it as an insulating layer to a football game or when walking the dog, our selection puffys will keep you warm and on trend. Base layers used to be called “long underwear” and they were meant to be hidden. Not anymore! Today’s base layers are at home, on the slopes and on the streets … layer up, strip down!
You guys are more than just a ski and snowboard shop. What other goodies do you carry?
We carry a fun and trendy selection of lifestyle wear. Sweaters, wraps, casual jackets, shirts and top, dresses, skirts, tights, hats, scarves, handmade purses and sporty bags, etc. - perfect après wear that looks good without a lot of effort. New this year: we’re excited about our selection of tall leather boots, casual footwear and cozy slippers (mandatory for cold winter mornings!). You’ll also find things like portable speakers and headphones, hydration packs, logo wear and Ellicottville branded t-shirts, hoodies, hats and water bottles.
Let’s talk about the Speed Factory. Word has it MSG just unleashed a new tool in the back shop that brings the art of hot wax to a whole new level.
The Mud, Sweat n’ Gears “Speed Factory” is home to the most innovative tuning machinery from Montana of Switzerland. In order to compliment the existing machinery, we added a new tool called the “Wax Future”. This machine uses an infrared heat source to heat the base of the ski. This provides better and deeper wax penetration into the base of the ski, for longer and better gliding on the snow. If you find yourself frustrated by catching edges, have no bite on hard snow, see damage on your base or you neglected your equipment over the summer, it’s time for a proper tune-up at the Speed Factory.
Your fleet of ski/board rentals is extraordinary, giving customers the opportunity to “try before they buy.” Can you give us a glimpse into the selection available? Do you offer seasonal equipment leasing?
It can be challenging to choose the right equipment that suits your level and style preference. We demo almost all of the high-end skis on our wall and usually in more than one size. With a greater variety to choose from, the better the chance our customers will find the proper ski. Our seasonal leasing program is very popular. It’s an affordable way to outfit kids who are new to skiing and snowboarding and for kids who are growing like weeds. We offer both new and used ski and snowboard equipment.
What’s the MSG staff’s take-out of choice when it comes to mid-day hunger or late night work hours?
It’s no secret that the staff at MSG has a pretty good appetite … and we’re no strangers to any of the establishments in town. While we have several local take-out favorites, our best meals usually come off the grill on our back deck, arrive in a crock pot or homemade sweets made by someone’s mother.
