Winter Weekend Getaways in the ANF Region of PA
Cooler temperatures inspire loads of winter fun in the Allegheny National Forest Region in Pennsylvania, from cross-country skiing to professional theater. Make your plans now for a lovely winter weekend getaway with lodging choices from the plush to the primitive, in the wildly beautiful Pennsylvania Wilds.
Winter is the perfect time to whisk your loved one away on an enchanting break for two. Nothing booked? Fear not: from cute cottages to luxurious lodges at a variety of different price points, here are a few lovely hideaways that are available for a romantic winter getaway.
Treat yourself and a loved one to a very special Valentine’s Day weekend at the cozy and romantic Lodge at Glendorn. Their Valentine’s Day special is a weekend tailored for lovers - couples will receive a special intimate lodging package including a two-night stay at Glendorn (a 4-star, Relais & Chateaux property) with gourmet breakfast, lunch, and an exquisite dinner served in style in the “big house.”  Guests will receive a half dozen roses and chocolate covered strawberries in their room upon arrival. Rooms feature woodburning fireplaces that add to the ambiance as you peek through the glass at a winter wonderland just outside your doorstep.
Your Valentine’s Day package also includes an adventurous jeep tour among the beautiful snow covered pines and sparkling ice frosted streams. Come inside from the chilly winds of winter to enjoy a luxurious couple’s massage. Valentine’s Day packages start at $2,166.33.

Located at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest along Route 6 is another option at a very moderate price point for a couple’s or family getaway. The Olmsted Manor offers a choice of an overnight in the Tudor style mansion, or a stay in the charming “Carriage House” on the grounds of the Manor.
The Manor can accommodate 12 overnight guests. All of the bedrooms are furnished differently, and the house has an air of faded elegance.  A spacious living room with fireplace and grand piano is the perfect place for friends to join together in laughter and fellowship. The Manor also boasts an elegant dining room and a small kitchen for guests who prefer to prepare and serve their own food.  The kitchen is furnished, complete with a full-size refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher and coffee maker.  To add to the fun, the Manor also contains an original two-lane bowling alley on the attic level.
The “Cottage in the Woods” is the original Olmsted Manor Carriage House. It consists of a modest second floor apartment with two small bedrooms, a kitchen complete with full-size refrigerator, stove and dishes for guest use, as well as a comfortable living room with television set. Room rates start at $36 to $46 a night in the Manor house, and $50 a night at the Carriage House. Olmsted Manor, located at 17 East Main Street, Ludlow, PA, phone 814-945-6512, www.olmstedmanor.org.

In the age of social media, a written love letter has become even more powerful.

A lovely addition for overnight guests at Glendorn are the services offered at The Forest Spa at Glendorn. Signature services can include a fresh facial, tandem massage, or a lavender and lemongrass manicure and pedicure.
The Wine Lover’s Body Treatment, a Tuscan wine therapy treatment, begins with a lymphatic stimulating dry brushing followed by an exfoliation using crushed grape seeds and blackberry fibers all while red wine mingles in this innovative brew to gently polish the skin. This is followed by a stimulating massage using a blend of Mediterranean olive oil and red grape seed extract. This wine lovers experience is concluded with a Mediterranean wine and honey masque.
Other massage treatments include a Swedish massage or a deep tissue massage. The Fuller Brook hot stone treatment creates a wonderful sense of comfort as the energy from hot stones sooth tight muscles, relieving stored tension in the body.
Men can enjoy an executive men’s facial - a European style facial with a skin analysis followed by a deep cleanse, healing mask, and a hot towel wrap will leave the skin hydrated and youthful. Gift certificates are available, appointments and reservations are recommended and are subject to availability.

Experienced cross-country skiers can ski on the Hidden Valley Trail, a 3.5-mile loop that follows an 1880’s narrow gauge railroad grade, or the Marilla Springs Trail, a 3.6-mile poin-to-point trail perfect for the slightly more aggressive trail enthusiast. Trail volunteers will provide a shuttle to the upper trailhead of Marilla Springs during the event. Both trails are un-groomed and crisscross through scenic forest terrains of snow-frosted white pines and rugged rock outcrops.
