Life Is Sweet ...

in the Allegheny National Forest Region of PA

February is the time to enjoy fine wine, fine dining, and some very fine handmade chocolates in the Allegheny National Forest Region of northwestern Pennsylvania. For Valentine’s Day choose from date night dining, wine and chocolate tasting, a painting party or an afternoon playing in the great outdoors.

First established in 1901 as part of the famous steelmaker Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropic efforts to establish free public libraries across the country, the Free Library of Bradford, Pennsylvania was built on land donated by the City of Bradford. Located at the corner of Congress and West Corydon Streets, the Bradford Public Library operated for over 90 years in the beautiful building built of locally produced Hanley brick. In 1991 the library moved to a new location.

This historic library building is now home to Beefeaters Restaurant. Beefeaters, a locally owned restaurant, offers a dining experience in professionally decorated rooms which previously served as the reading room, adult library, and children’s reading room, and the upstairs private reading room. The location of their full service bar is where you once checked out books from the librarian.

Beefeaters is famous for their roast beef. All dishes are sliced to order at their beef bar located in the dining room (the reading room). A local favorite is “Beef on Wick,” a delicious sandwich of tender sliced roast beef nestled on a salted Kǜmmelwick bun, served alone or with American or German potato salad. You can also order French dip ‘Au Jus,’ slices of tender beef on a hard roll, served with ‘au jus’ sauce for dipping. The roast beef dinner features slices of tender beef smothered with gravy, served with your choice of potato, tossed salad, rolls and butter.

The restaurant offers a selection of salads, shrimp, lobster, fish and chicken entrees along with traditional pasta dishes such as fettuccini alfredo and spaghetti and meatballs. Vegetable stir fry entrees, served over rice, are also available.

For date night, start out with a signature daily drink special such as their Orange Pomegranate Martini. For an app, consider either the tasty Greek calamari or an order of fresh mushroom caps stuffed with a special seafood dressing topped with sharp cheddar cheese.  Follow this with a cup of their homemade soup of the day. For the main entrée, we recommend their mouth-watering Prime Rib or Beef Au Jus, which is roasted very, very slowly to lock in all the natural flavors, with a fresh side salad and your choice of starch. End the evening with a slice of their graham cracker cream pie or maybe a deliciously decadent desert dripping in chocolate.

For Valentine’s Day, Sunday, Feb. 14, Beefeaters will be hosting a special brunch from 11am-3pm, along with their regular menu from 3pm-10pm.

Beefeaters is located at 27 Congress Street, Bradford, PA. Regular hours are 11am-10pm Monday through Saturday. For information or reservations for groups, please call 814-362-9717, thebeefeatersrestaurant.com.
