Despite the marginal hand Mother Nature has dealt us at the beginning of this season, the lake effect machine eventually fired up, and the slopes are now alive at HoliMont and Holiday Valley. One of the local, specialty retailers remaining steadfast and defiant in the face of the starting forecast, is none other than The Boardroom Snowboard Shop. If you’ve ever read SNOWED-IN, you’re certainly familiar with the Timkey clan - Mike, Jody, Samantha and Spencer (and of course the shop beagles!) - who have remained the only snowboard specific shop in the 14731 area for 32 years. Their commitment to the sport transcends not only their retail platform, but in their day-to-day lives, as they can often be found taking laps together on the slopes of Holiday Valley. With an unrivaled passion such as this, of course we needed to drop in and check out what goods they have in store for those visiting Ellicottville this season.
We caught up with Spencer at The Boardroom’s NEW second location, dubbed ‘The Boardroom on Main’, a 1200 sq. ft. retail location in the lower level of 16 Washington Street, right in the walking/shopping district of Ellicottville. Speaking on behalf of the entire family, Timkey revealed despite the weather the past couple of months, business has stayed steady, the stoke level is at an all-time high, and boards are flying out the door, waxed with One Ball Jay and ready to hit the slopes. Among the boards Timkey is most hyped on for the coming season is the Proto, manufactured by Never Summer Industries from Denver, Colorado.
“With variable conditions often found on the east coast, this board is the perfect addition to any quiver,” Timkey explains, calling it the “swiss army knife” of their board wall. Proto alludes to the word ‘prototype’, as year after year, Never Summer continues to push innovations into this model of their line. With an extended rocker camber profile, riders find their eye-to-edge transitions are easier than ever. Additionally, the Proto features harmonic dampeners and perforated rocker pads, which are perfect for those firm days on ice coast hard-pack. Timkey also revealed The Boardroom also has a complete line of Never Summer and Lib Tech demo boards, so customers can try before they buy, should boards like the Proto pique their interest.
Speaking of Lib Tech, The Boardroom is the only place you’ll find this brand - one of the leading innovators in the snowboard industry. With their Magne-Traction serrated edge technology and various camber/sidecut stories, this brand has single handedly paved the way for re-thinking the way guys and gals can attack the mountain. Of course we can’t leave the ladies out with the new technology for the year, which led Timkey to telling us about the GNU (part of the Lib-Tech brand umbrella) ‘Ladies Choice’ deck, the pro model of none other than Jamie Anderson, one of the top professional female snowboarders in the world.
The Boardroom has long had a reputation as the best place to shop for women’s specific snowboards, outerwear and accessories, as they previously had a dedicated section in their store called The Powder Room. They’ve now evolved, and although the name is no longer used, the commitment remains unrivaled, made apparent by stocking boards such as the Ladies Choice. Snappy yet still forgiving, the Ladies Choice is yet again a ‘Good Wood’ winner in the annual TransWorld Snowboarding (a leading publication in the shred industry) awards. Featuring rocker camber between the feet, elliptical cambers out to the contact points, as well as an asymmetrical shape, this board is without a doubt leading the pack in a competitive women’s category.
No trip to either of The Boardroom locations would be complete without browsing their expansive accessory selection. Whether its custom building a pair of goggles at their one-of-a-kind Oakley goggle bar, getting fitted with a Smith or Giro helmet, or checking out ‘gadgets’ from GoPro, Outdoor Tech, or SP Gadgets, you’d be hard pressed to not leave without picking up at least one more item you didn’t know you needed. New this year, and unique to The Boardroom, are Phunksunwear facemarks and neck tubes. Coming in at a great holiday price of just $25, you can take home unique custom printed pieces featuring the iconic clocktower of Holiday Valley or the facade of The Boardroom’s flagship location, with their trademark United States flag prominently displayed. The Timkeys have long felt that keeping their focus on domestically made product was important, so adding Phunkshunwear with their custom production and Colorado base was a no brainer. With plenty of colors and patterns available, there will be something to match your current (or new) outerwear kit without a doubt!
These are just a few of the many amazing products meticulously selected to stock the shelves and racks at The Boardroom (6113 Route 219, 716-699-5620) and The Boardroom on Main (16 Washington Street, 716-394-5800). The Timkeys encourage you to stop in to either of their locations to get the full experience and see what has them so stoked on the 2015-16 winter season here in Ellicottville, NY. They’re also quite active on Facebook and Instagram, producing weekly content to help educate customers on product lines and happenings at the local ski area. Give them a follow @boardroomeville.
