Every Day is a Snow Day!

Explore PA: A Cold Weather Champion

The Allegheny National Forest Region in McKean County, Pennsylvania is where you go to find snow. With Pennsylvania’s state record of the most annual snowfall and the coldest temperatures, McKean County is a cold weather champion. Located just 30 minutes south of Ellicottville, NY and 90 minutes from Buffalo or Erie, we invite you to visit. During winter, every day is a snow day!

WINTER IS MORE FUN AT THE LODGE

The sparkle in your eyes will match the sparkle of the crisp white snowflakes as you enjoy a variety of activities in the Forest - choose from cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, a winter ATV ride, or a variety of hunting and ice-fishing opportunities.

For those wanting to do it all, the Lodge at Glendorn was voted the #1 resort hotel in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure Magazine. In the winter, you will think you have stepped into a snow globe as you experience the enchantment of the Lodge at Glendorn. Participate in cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, Mat-Track Jeep Tours, and curling and ice skating on Skipper Lake. For overnight guests, guided snowmobile tours (with all equipment provided) are offered. Knowledgeable guides make it easy and fun to try something new. Their ORVIS endorsed guides can outfit you for bird hunting, skeet shooting, and all types of fishing, including ice-fishing.

After a day outdoors, enjoy returning to the “Big-House,” a grand Adirondack style redwood lodge, or book a spa service for complete relaxation.  If you are seeking a memorable getaway, reserve one of the beautifully appointed cabins. All guests at Glendorn enjoy meals crafted by their award-wining culinary team. The Lodge at Glendorn is located at 1000 Glendorn Drive, Bradford, PA 16701.  Reservations: 814-362-6511 or www.glendorn.com.

NEW KINZUA BRIDGE VISITORS CENTER

Experience the Kinzua Bridge State Park in the winter by visiting the Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center which features two exhibit halls brimming with historic displays and interactive exhibits scaled for all ages. Learn the story of General Kane and Octave Chanute, and their “can do” spirit which inspired them to build a bridge higher and longer than anything in the world in 1882. In the excursion train replica train car, you can view videos of the original trains as they crossed the Kinzua Viaduct, before the tornado of 2003 partially destroyed the bridge.

Celebrate the re-invention of the original six towers of the viaduct, complete with railroad tracks, into the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk - “One of the top 10 most scenic skywalks in the world.”  Onsite is the PA Wilds Gift Shop where you can shop for handcrafted, handmade items, local books and photography from the region. Admission is free to the center, the park and onto the skywalk. Kinzua Bridge State Park and Visitors Center is located at 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA. The park is open daily from 8am-dusk; call ahead to check seasonal hours for the center: 814-778-5467.

SNOWMOBILING – HAVE IT YOUR WAY

The Allegheny National Forest Region offers a wide selection of snowmobile fun for both beginners and experienced trail riders. Groomed trails are open during the season starting in late December and running until April 1. Trails take you into the big woods, where you can experience wildly beautiful vistas as you travel along the forest trails and past towering pines and huge rock formations. Non-resident and resident registration can be found at www.pasnow.org. A downloadable trail map is available online, as is seasonal snow and trail conditions at www.visitANF.com.

Snowmobile Rentals: Snowmobile rentals are available at Myers Motorsports, 3176 Route 219, Kane, PA. You will want to call ahead to reserve your equipment and to check trail conditions.
