Product Picks by Mud, Sweat n' Gears

MSG Stocking Up on Top Performing Nordica, Head, Volkl Rossignol, along with a fresh selection of lifestyle wear
Interview with:
Kimberly Reading, Owner

PERKS: Let us in on your top product picks for this season …
READING: This season’s top performers include some of our favorites like Nordica, Head, Volkl and Rossignol. Whether you have an appetite for floaty powder skis, all mountain performers, gutsy sidecuts for groomer days or blazing fast race equipment, these ski companies have what you're looking for. Our “go-anywhere” recommendations would be the Head Supershape i.Titan, the Nordica Enforcer 93, the Rossignol Experience 88 and the Volkl Kendo … all offering a blend of go-fast stability, all mountain versatility and can handle anything at your favorite resort.
Our helmet and goggle collection is bigger than ever! We have dedicated the entire front corner of our store to this category. We have a huge selection of helmets from Giro, Smith, Bern and POC, and goggles from Smith, Giro, Oakley, POC and Electric. This year’s favorite helmets include the Giro Range MIPS, the Smith Vantage and POC Receptor Backcountry. These helmets look slick and feel great, all while offering state-of-the-art protection and smart features. For seamless goggle compatibility we suggest the Oakley Flight Deck XM, the Smith I/0 or the Giro Contact. All feature color boosting lense technology, anti fog treatments and interchangeable lense options. Upgrading your old pair of goggles for a new pair will make everything you see look just as good as it did when you upgraded your television from standard to high definition.

PERKS: Demos, seasonal equipment leasing, America’s Best Bootfitters … details please …
READING: It can be challenging to choose the right equipment that suits your level and style preference. We demo almost all of the high-end skis on our wall and usually in more than one size. With a greater variety to choose from, the better the chance our customers will find the proper ski. We also offer daily ski and snowboard rentals. Last season we added the “performance rental” to our fleet which gives customers the opportunity to upgrade to an all-mountain ski designed for hardpack, groomers and bumps.
Our season-long leasing program is very popular. It’s an affordable way to outfit kids who are new to skiing and snowboarding and for kids who are growing like weeds. We offer both new and used ski and snowboard equipment starting at $99.
The first step in finding a proper fitting boot is finding the right bootfitter. Mud, Sweat n' Gears has become a destination for people who want specialized boot-fitting. These days customers seem to understand the importance of the hands-on, face-to-face experience of buying boots.  As a member store of America’s Best Bootfitters, our job at Mud Sweat n’ Gears is to find you the perfect match. We're not going to put a customer in a random pair of boots and send them on their way. Finding the right boot fit takes time and means more than just trying on a pair or two of boots. Our guys are very good at what they do and take the time to make sure the boots they fit you with are suited to your needs and abilities. We offer a wide range of ski boots from Rossignol, Nordica, Head, Tecnica, Lange, Dalbello and Fischer.

PERKS: You’ve got some pretty intense machines running in the back of the shop.  No doubt you’re one of the top “go-to” places for tuning.  What exactly do you have going on back there?
READING: The MSG “Speed Factory” is home to the most innovative tuning machinery from Montana of Switzerland. Weather you need a basic wax, base repair or a specialized race tune, we can help. In order to compliment the existing machinery, we added a new tool called the “Wax Future”. This machine uses an infrared heat source to heat the base of the ski. This provides better and deeper wax penetration into the base of the ski, for longer and better gliding on the snow. If you find yourself frustrated by catching edges, have no bite on hard snow, see damage on your base or you neglected your equipment over the summer, it’s time for a proper tune-up at the Speed Factory.

PERKS: We can always count on MSG to bring in a fresh selection of lifestyle wear each year.  What do you have hanging on the racks this fall / winter?
READING: We carry a fun and trendy selection of lifestyle wear - pieces you’ll reach for on and off the slopes. Lots of sweaters, cashmere wraps, casual jackets, shirts and tops, dresses, skirts, tights, hats, scarves, sporty bags, footwear, etc. - perfect après ski and resort wear. Several brands are showing classic throwback style with shaggy sherpa fleece. We especially love Burton’s Bolden full zip fleece for women and the Burton Bower full-zip fleece for guys. Toad & Co also put a fresh spin on Ajax Sherpa Fleece pullover inspired in the late-90’s.  We’re crazy for anything using Burton’s Neu Nordic print for ladies … everything from totes, backpacks, hoodies, to Gortex outerwear. Cute as pie! Once again, we’re excited to have an even bigger selection of Alp n’ Rock this season, including the signature Ellicottville branded crew neck. Alp n’ Rock expanded their selection of outerwear with sweet and sassy looks. Effortless pieces that work on and off the slopes.

PERKS: What’s the staff’s choice for take-out when it comes to mid-day hunger or late night work hours?
READING: We love good eats! Many days we fire up the grill or we assign a “Brock-Pot” meal to a certain staff member … we have created amazing meals ranging from grilled caprese chicken, quesadillas, grilled chicken tacos to BBQ pulled pork. If we don’t have time to organize a “Brock-Pot” meal or a cookout, we gravitate toward chicken enchiladas from Dina’s, organic burritos from Bike and Bean or custom built pizza from Monroe Street Brick and Brew.

PERKS: When the snow melts and the doors to MSG close for the off-season, what do you guys do to keep busy until the snow flies again?
READING: We’re all active, outdoor oriented people so spending as much time outside is important to us. Even though Mud, Sweat n’ Gears is closed May, June and July, we’re still on the scene prepping for the upcoming season. There’s always something to be done. We also have a fast growing ecommerce website (www.mudsweatgears.com) that keeps us on our toes year round. There’s really never a dull moment.
