Step In and Catch Your Breath

The benefits of Halotherapy, available at the Ellicottville Salt Cave

Everyday our body is continually being exposed to positive ions from cell phones, microwaves, computers, tv’s, the air we breathe, and the water we drink.  Himalayan pink salt contains negative ions that are absorbed through the skin and inhaled into our lungs during a 45-minute salt cave session, thus creating a mind and body balance.

The Ellicottville Salt Cave is a re-creation of the healing allergen and pathogen free microclimate found in natural salt mines in the Himalayans of Europe.  It is constructed of natural salt, water, and wood.  A water feature acts as a natural halogenerating ionizer.

HISTORY: Modern use of salt therapy (halotherapy) started in Germany when Dr. Karl Herman Spannage noticed improvement in the health of his patients after they hid in local salt caves to escape heavy bombing during WWII.  Since then, many European spas and medical clinics have incorporated halotherapy into their practices.

In 1843, Dr. Felix Boczkowski believed the air in the Wieliczka, Poland salt mine had healing effects on people with respiratory problems.  Today the Wieliczka salt mine is operating as the largest underground rehab and treatment center in the world.

HOW HALOTHERAPY WORKS: The water-feature in the salt cave acts as a natural halogenerator and ionizer.  As brine (salt water) is pumped at a slow steady pace, it evaporates, producing a saline vapor effect within the room.  The water cascade creates a higher concentration of negative ions which is found naturally around flowing water or the ocean.  This method, speleotherapy, is considered a passive therapy - achieved with patience and consistency over time.  Clients relax in the salt cave and inhale the salt-enriched air deep into their lungs to start a healing process.

Just a 45-minute salt cave session is equal to 4 days at the beach!

Halotherapy treatment is clinically proven to:

• clear mucus from the airways thus removing airflow constriction

• boost immune system

• provide anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effects

• reduce symptoms of asthma, allergies, sinus, congestion

• improve lung function

• help clear unwanted inhaled particles from the lungs

• de-stress and decrease depression

• ease skin ailments such as acne, psoriasis, eczema

• Himalayan salt is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, mucolytic effective, pathogen and allergen free.

AFTER EFFECTS OF TREATMENT: Halotherapy is 100% safe, natural, and drug free.  Normally there are no after effects.  Some people may experience production of mucous, or a throat tickle.  Sipping water can relieve this.  A runny nose or cough is the body’s way of eliminating toxins, pollens, and viruses.  Smokers may experience an agitated cough and excess mucous.

WHAT SHOULD CLIENTS WEAR: Clients will be fully dressed.  Wear comfortable clothing.  The temperature inside the salt cave is 65-70°F.  Shoes will be removed and replaced with paper foot booties as clients will be walking on salted surface.

In April 2016 Lisa Gastle enjoyed the salt cave and reported, "I have been congested for the past 6 months and only able to breathe through my nose at a minimum.  I also lost my sense of smell.  I came to the salt cave and within two days of the session I have gained 90% of my breathing back as well as regained my sense of smell."  She continues, "I also have asthma and have not been using my asthma inhalers since the session.”

Halotherapy is an alternative treatment that has been going on for ages in Europe and Asia, just coming to North America the last couple of years. Stop in and talk with us to learn more.  Better yet, book a session and try it for yourself!
