The winds of romance sometimes blow hot and cold, much like this year’s winter weather. For Valentine’s Day, and throughout February, the Allegheny National Forest Region offers a variety of fun-filled activities.
Catch some ice at the public ice skating rink in Bradford, or make some tracks - big ones with borrowed snowshoes at the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, PA. Indulge yourself at The Sweet Shoppe, try a Wine & Chocolate Tasting at Flickerwood Wine Cellars, disappear to the Inn on Maple Street, or spend Monday evenings enjoying the Independent and the upcoming Academy Award Winning Film Series at the historic Art Deco Main Street Moviehouse in Bradford.
SPIN & TWIRL, SPARKLE & SHINE
Try out your fancy footwork at the Callahan Ice Rink in Bradford. Both beginners and experienced skaters alike will enjoy skating in this fully enclosed public ice rink. The rink offers a heated viewing area, skate rentals, four locker rooms and a concession stand.
From February until the end of March, hours for open skate are Tuesday from 6:30pm-9pm, Friday from 6pm-9pm, and Saturday/Sunday from 1pm-4pm.
If you would like to watch a local hockey match, the University of Pittsburgh’s Bradford Hockey Team plays at this rink, as does the Bradford Youth USA Sanctioned Hockey Team. Call for their upcoming schedule.

MAKE SOME TRACKS
The Kinzua Bridge State Park now has a snowshoe loaner program. A variety of snowshoes in varying sizes can be checked out of the park office from Monday through Saturday during the hours of 8an-4pm for hikes through the park.
Park staff will provide a brief “how-to” and history of snowshoeing. There is no fee for the loaner snowshoes, but a valid driver’s license must be presented to participate in the loaner program. Snowshoes are loaned on a first come-first served basis.
There must be a minimum of five inches of snow at the park to participate in the snowshoe program. To check out current snow conditions at the Kinzua Bridge State Park, go to dcnr.state.pa.us and click on weather report or call the park office at 814-778-5467.
The Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitors Center is also open Monday through Saturday from 8am-4pm for touring the exhibits during the winter season. Admission is free to both the park and the visitors center. The Kinzua Bridge State Park’s GPS address is 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA.
THE SWEET SHOPPE
At the southern edge of the Allegheny National Forest, in the small village of Kane, is The Sweet Shoppe known as “the Chocolatier of the Alleghenies.” The Sweet Shoppe’s signature sweet is the Mountain Marshmallow. This delicacy is crafted of homemade caramel and homemade marshmallow, with walnuts, all covered in their delicious milk chocolate.
This shop is brimming with a delicious variety of homemade chocolates and candy treats, such as chocolate strawberries dipped in handmade chocolate, delightfully decorated and extremely tasty cupcakes, along with their own homemade ice cream in a variety of seasonal flavors. Other treats include cream horns, cannoli, pies, cookies and a chocolate brownie accurately named - death by brownie.
Visitors can shop the display cases of this quaint café for their favorite chocolates and baked goods while enjoying a cup of one of their specialty coffees. Beautifully styled gift packages are available for pre-order, as are their specialty cakes, pies, cupcakes or chocolates. Because all items are handmade, please allow time when placing specialty orders.

MARILLA WINTER TREK
Get outside and play! Join in the fun at Marilla Reservoir Trail System at the Marilla Winter Trek on February 12. Beat the cabin fever blues, burst out of the indoors with a group of friends or family and join in the fun activities at the Marilla Reservoir in Bradford, Pennsylvania. The Winter Trek runs from noon-4pm.
Enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, geocaching, or hiking the Marilla Trail system. (Activities will be dependent on the weather and the amount of snow.) Shuttles will be provided to the top of the Marilla Springs Trail, guided snowshoe hikes will take place at White Pines Trail, and lessons are available on snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Equipment is provided for participants to try a new sport. Adults and children are welcome.
Hot chocolate and mulled cider drinks are provided free at the gazebo area. Bring some marshmallows or hot dogs to roast on the bonfire! Come on out and enjoy the winter. The reservoir is located along Route 346, five miles west of the City of Bradford. This event is sponsored by the Tuna Valley Trail Association and there is no fee to attend. VALENTINE’S DAY WINE & CHOCOLATE TASTING
Bring your sweetheart to the Valentine Day Wine and Chocolate tasting at Flickerwood Wine Cellars on Saturday, February 11. Award winning Flickerwood wines will be paired with select chocolate delicacies. Sample five delicious chocolate creations paired with five Flickerwood wines.
A reservation is required for this event. There will be three tasting opportunities: the first seating is at 2pm, followed by a seating at 4pm, and then the last seating is at 6pm. Wine down the night before at their Valentine’s Day Party with the band Uncorked from 7:30pm-10:30pm. No cover charge; ID is required.

ROMANTIC GETAWAY TO THE INN ON MAPLE STREET

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES
The Main Street Moviehouse in Bradford hosts an Independent Film Series on Monday nights from January 9 through February 20 starting at 5:30pm. Admission is only $7.00.
Patriots Day, an account of Boston Police Commissioner’s Ed Davis’s actions leading up to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath will be shown February 13. Queen of Katwe, the story of how a Ugandan girl sees her world rapidly change after being introduced to the game of chess will be shown on February 20.
Starting February 27 and running until May 15, the Academy Awards Film Series will start. This series will include many of the films up for awards which are predicted to be winners in their respective categories. Films in this series include Captain Fantastic, La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Fences, Loving, Moonlight, Jackie, Lion, Arrival, 20th Century Woman, Silence and Nocturnal Animals. A season pass is available for $84 which includes admission and free medium popcorn to each show. Or pay regular admission of only $7.00 per show.

On February 16, Two Guys Drinking Beer, a classic musical duo, is sure to get you moving in your seat, if not out dancing on the floor, by performing favorite songs you probably know the words to. Coyote Moon Duo will perform on February 23; this duo will perform a variety of folk, folk rock, classic rock, along with some early country and Neil Young favorites.
