From Summer to Winter ...

Dekdebruns transitions into ski season with exciting offerings
Interview with Ciara Peters, Soft Goods Manager
You just finished up year two of being open during the summer. How did it compare to your first year? Can you give us a glimpse of some of the product you carried?
It went well! Everything went smoothly - it’s great to see familiar faces all year long. We continued to carry a large offering of O’Neill clothing and bathing suits for the whole family as well as some samplings from Picture Organic Clothing. New this summer for us was Mountain Khakis - a lifestyle brand we loved so much that we are carrying their fall/winter line as well.
Word has it, you have a new hard-goods manager in the shop …
After over a decade of Jay running the snowboard shop and being our hard-goods manager, he has stepped down to a part-time position in response to accepting a full-time year-round position. You now can stop in and see the familiar face of Curtis Boza; he has been with us for four years and will now be stepping up to run the snowboard shop and be Greg’s right hand man. A snowboarder since age 8 and a skier since age 3 - we think he’s a great fit!
What’s new in the shop for this coming winter? (which, by the way, will be Dekdebruns’ 55th year in business ... whoah!)
SunIce is not a new brand in any capacity for us, be we are so excited for their offerings this year! Also, for the first time in years we will once again have Bogner in store. For the skiers: Apex ski boots (if you haven’t heard of these check them out!) has completely revamped their line-up by having all the chassis upgraded to the XP model from last year.  As for the snowboarders - they should be super pumped - Nidecker is back in the States! Stop in and check out Parajumper - a lifestyle brand that will keep you looking and feeling good!
What are a few accessories you carry that you would recommend every skier add to their gear bag?
Helmets!!! (Safety first.) We carry Giro, Smith, Marker and Uvex helmets. Each brand has their own unique features, but they are all equally SAFE! A large portion of our helmets now offer MIPS (Multi-directional impact protection system) which allows the helmet to rotate around your head to help your brain twist less.
We also love all things merino wool - socks, layering pieces, neck-gators and balaclavas. Merino wool specifically is NOT itchy and keeps you comfortable. There is nothing better on a cold day than merino wool - catch me wearing it at work on a regular basis!
Along with snowsports equipment and clothing, you also carry an array of EVL-branded merchandise.  Can you give us a glimpse of some of these items you’ve got stocked on shelves?
We offer a full line-up of Ellicottville t-shirts, (short & long sleeve) sweatshirts, crew necks and hats, as well as shot glasses, coffee mugs and pint glasses. New this year is a full array of fun EVL stickers.
Can you hit on some of the services you guys are known for?
We are most well-known for our amazing boot fitting, but also for our ski and board tune-ups … let’s not forget our rentals - both daily and seasonal. Something a lot of people don’t realize is we actually make custom footbeds; they are obviously great in ski/snowboard boots, but they are also perfect to put in shoes that you spend a lot of time in. If you ask any of our staff, there is a good chance most of us have footbeds in our shoes! The Dekdebruns crew really prides themselves on customer service - we all love sharing our knowledge of products and passion for the sports.
Favorite watering hole to unwind at after a busy day in the shop ….
That’s a tough question - we really don’t discriminate! We like to share the love and will pretty much head anywhere (and sometimes everywhere)! … For more quiet nights, we like to have “family” dinners at each other’s houses. We’re a tight knit crew!
How is retirement going for Greg? Has he been able to stay away? Can we expect to see him around this winter?
Oh Greg … I don’t think he quite knows how to retire! He will be in the store full-time this season. As the business is for sale, he will be holding down the fort until he can find a buyer that wants to keep his vision alive.
