Mud, Sweat N' Gears

18 Monroe Street, Ellicottville NY | mudsweatgears.com

What’s new in the shop this year?

So much newness! For starters, we now feature The North Face. In addition to the iconic apparel that represent the authentic outdoor culture of the North Face, we will be carrying the Steep Series Collection which is exclusive to specialty retail ... meaning you won’t find the product in big box retail. The Steep Series is ultra durable, technical snow gear designed by The North Face athletes.  Picture Organic Clothing is also a fun new outerwear brand for us. Picture strikes the right balance of style, performance and eco-awareness. The company prides itself on using eco-friendly, recycled materials that will help with the fight against climate change. (Pretty cool stuff!) We also increased our junior selection of outerwear - offering sizes 2T-18 - from Obermeyer, Spyder, 686, Burton, Kamik, Rossignol and Orage. We also have a big selection of junior size helmets, goggles and accessories.

In regards to ski and snowboard equipment ... it’s all good! Many of the skis featured at Mud, Sweat n’ Gears have struck ski test gold in SKI Magazine’s “Gear of the Year 2020.“ MSG staff picks include the Head Core Series, the Nordica Enforcer Series, the Elan Wingman 82, the Atomic Bent Chetler 100, Nordica Spitfire, the Volkl Kendo and the Volkl Mantra ... just to name a few.

On the snowboard side, Nidecker boards and Vans boots are new to our shop this year. Highlights include the Nidecker Escape and the Nidecker Score for girls. We also have a deeper offering of Rome Snowboards, Thirty Two boots and Union bindings. Other featured brands include Burton, K2, Ride, Rossignol and Head.

We can always count on MSG to bring in a fresh selection of lifestyle wear. What do you have on the racks?

For starters, our hands-down favorite this fall is Parajumpers. Inspired by the men of the 210th Rescue Squadron (based in Anchorage, Alaska), these incredible parkas are made with hard wearing nylon, down-filled and fur-trimmed hoods ... not to mention incredible workmanship and attention to detail.  If you’re looking for a jacket that can stand up to Western New York winters, Parajumpers is the answer.  We also have a great selection of sweaters, flannels, casual jackets, shirts and tops, hats, scarves, and sporty bags that keep pace with your active agenda. Featured brands include Johnny Was, Kari Traa, Prana, Alp n’ Rock, Krimson Klover and many more.

Can you give us some details on your leasing program?

Mud, Sweat n’ Gears has a broad selection of high-quality equipment that can either be rented by the day or leased for the entire season - your choice, depending upon your specific needs. If you’re only going to ski a few times, then renting might be the right way to go. If you’re intending to ski more, but aren’t ready to purchase, then leasing could be the best choice. Not sure? Ask us, and we’ll help you determine what’s appropriate for you. Our seasonal lease program is an affordable solution for families with growing kids. New and used ski or snowboard packages are available and come with season-long free tuning, boot adjustments, size upgrades for growing kids and an affordable buyout option. New lease packages give the user the pleasure of skiing on all new equipment and putting in the first scratches. Used equipment has one or more seasons use, but still in top shape. We also offer the option of leasing just a ski or snowboard boot, or renting just a ski or snowboard.

The Speed factory ... Go.

We take service seriously and have specialty services tailored for every skier and rider from a novice to elite racer. The “Speed Factory” at Mud, Sweat n’ Gears is home to the most innovative tuning machinery from Montana of Switzerland. Our backshop is home to a fully automated Montana Challenge “service robot”… the only one of its kind in Western New York. The Challenge Robot allows us to comprehensively cover every step of the ski service process, minimizing turn-around time while maximizing quality service results. We are able to offer a wider variety of base patterns and edge angles for all of our customers’ needs. In addition, our infrared “Wax Future” compliments the service robot. This machine uses an infrared heat source to heat the base of the ski. This provides better and deeper wax penetration into the base of the ski, for longer and better gliding on the snow. Bring us your tired, neglected, gouged, dinged, rusted, and slow running equipment and we will bring them back to full performance. Overnight service available.

You’re heading into year two of your East Aurora store. How’s it going up there?

So far, so good! We spent the summer months working on the second phase of building renovations and the outcome looks great! While the two stores are similar in branding, product selection and service, the East Aurora store isn’t an exact replica of the Ellicottville store ... it has a personality of its own. In addition to the leading ski and snowboard brands, we’ve added more lifestyle brands such as Patagonia, Kuhl and Sorel, just to name a few. Moving forward, the store in East Aurora will stay open year round.

I’m looking forward to seeing the personality of the new store evolve as it relates to our new customer base. And so far, so good. East Aurora is a vibrant community with local color and the right demographic for our business model.

When the snow melts and the shop closes down, what do you guys do to keep busy?

We’re all active, outdoor oriented people, so spending as much time outside is important to us. Even though Mud, Sweat n’ Gears in Ellicottville is closed May, June and July, we’re still on the scene prepping for the upcoming season. There’s always something to be done. Our internet business has seen steady growth (www.skiyard.com) and doesn't take a break in the summer months. Selling to a limitless geographical area keeps us busy year round.
