Ellicottville, New York has long been known for its social atmosphere laden with bars, and restaurants … where those traveling from near and far can imbibe in a beverage (or three) in a lively setting unlike any other. One of these fine establishments has taken things a step further by quietly becoming a self-sufficient powerhouse in managing the output of their core product - craft beer. By now I’m sure you realize I’m referring to none other than the Ellicottville Brewing Company, a staple in the village since its humble beginnings in 1995, when owners/founders Walter and Allen Yahn and Peter Kreinheder were inspired by a ski trip to Vail, to create their own family-run brand.
Accommodations to fit every budget and lifestyle ... plan your vaca to EVL the right way. Reserve your stay at one of our fine hotels, B&B's or choose a cozy chalet, townhouse or country home through one of our local real estate and rental management companies ...
If you are not familiar with the work of Michael Israel, it can best be described as a Cirque du Soleil performance that ultimately results in a Jackson Pollack-like life sized canvass of creativity. Israel is more than just a painter. He is a performer who gives the audience an artistic experience unlike any other. And he is coming to the Ellicottville Brewing Company this August.
Ellicottville as you know has a variety of bars and restaurants, but if you're looking for a cozy, quiet atmosphere to enjoy a dinner that rests on the finer side, The Silver Fox Steakhouse is the spot for you. SNOWED-IN stopped by to check in for this month’s Bartender Spotlight.
It won’t be long before all eyes are glued to televisions around the world as the 2014 Winter Olympics (officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games for those savvy in Roman numerals … or the 22nd Winter Olympics), are scheduled to take place from Feb. 6-23, 2014 in Sochi, Russia. The Olympics need no further explanation - some of the most exciting sports, coupled with the best athletes, make for some of the most memorable sporting accomplishments in history.
If you’ve ever been in the quaint village of Ellicottville and found yourself asking, “where can I go for a really good steak?” the answer is actually quite simple. The Silver Fox Steakhouse is an Ellicottville mainstay and its longevity in the market is a testament to the fine food and ambiance that you will find when you are a guest there.
If you happen to pop into Madigan’s during one of your winter pilgrimages to EVL, you’ll undoubtedly be greeted by a cast of characters like no other - from the patrons to the staff. This happy hour haven is home base for many locals who enjoy the house wine and the comfort afforded by the iconic woodstove. One of the newest faces behind the bar there is Jorden Leydecker, 22 years young, hailing from over the river and through the woods, growing up in nearby East Otto. When she’s not slinging drinks at the “Green Bar,” Leydecker is a self-employed personal trainer at Spring Creek Athletic Club in Springville, putting her Bachelor of Sport Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh to good use.
Her work has been showcased in many places, including The Inkwell in Allegany, the Oxford Gallery in Rochester, various galleries in northern California, and of course her own studio in Ellicottville, better known as the Mill Street Gallery. Her realistic paintings have a luminous quality that may cause you to question whether they are actual paintings, or photographs. We’d like you to meet Barbara Fox.
It’s no secret Ellicottville is an ever changing landscape. From the businesses in town, to the improvements at the local resorts, there is always SOMETHING changing. One of the constants however, is you will always find a charismatic, passionate cast of individuals holding down the fort at your favorite bars and restaurants in our little ski mecca. SNOWED-IN thought you should get to know some of these fine folks, so over the next few months, we’ll introduce you to some of our friends, in hopes that you’ll stop in and get to know them for yourself on your next visit to Ellicottville.
There’s nothing quite like the excitement of an approaching winter here in Ellicottville. The first frost, followed by first snowfall, and of course the first snowmaking efforts by Holiday Valley and HoliMont are just some of the events that make us yearn for that first chair of the season. Another one of the seasonal traditions here is what we like to call ‘PREMIERE SEASON’, where snow addicts from the area gather to watch the latest releases in ski & snowboard movies put out by major film companies.
Have the hustle, bustle, and pollution of an urban life left you yearning for some fresh air? Has the monotony of a desk-job left you in need of some culture? The Enchanted Mountains are the place for you, and Ellicottville is the sure choice to base yourself.
Ellicottville is known for its slopes and winter sports, but there are a lot of family-friendly events that don’t involve strapping on skis or a board. In addition to all the wonderful shops and restaurants, these events offer entertainment in the cold winter months.

The village of Ellicottville is fortunate to have multiple ski andsnowboard specialty shops, each with a distinct cast of characters and specialists to get you dialed in to hit the slopes. This month, we caught up with Tim Cummiskey, a long-time veteran of the ski business (41 years to be exact!) who has held it down as the man to see for some of the best bootfitting around at The City Garage (5 Monroe Street) for the last ten years.
“They’re an institution in Ellicottville,” remarked Jane Eshbaugh, Marketing Director at Holiday Valley. “They play great songs that everyone knows and for all ages. They’ll play just about anything you want.”
Looking at the outside of The Red Door Ski Shop in Ellicottville, it may seem pretty buttoned up and well mannered, however, their roots come from a story connected to a little rebellion. Hard to believe, I know … but it’s true!
With her bubbly personality, bright smile and kind heart, Katy Herbach transformed the former Cooling’s Café into Katy’s Café and Cake Creations. It’s now known to many as a fresh, local hot spot and comfort zone for area residents and travelers.
Alright. Enough is enough. We've spent our last day at the pool, shanked our last golf ball, and retired our mountain bikes to the basements. It's time to embrace the quickly approaching winter and buckle up for what is sure to be a killer season. For those of us who live for windchill and lake effect squalls, nothing quite fosters the stoke of a season full of whiteouts like premiere season.
