Inspired by a love for her country and for high speed turns, Kaylie Buck is racing towards her future. The former HoliMont Snowboard Team member has been competing on the NorAm Circuit for Team Canada, and this season, she is producing podium results!

Like many teenagers, Kaylie Buck’s life is a complex juggling act of commitments to keep and schedules to adhere by.  Dig deeper though and you’ll soon find that unlike most teenagers, the sixteen-year-old Kaylie has national pride and Olympic aspirations on her mind every morning when she wakes up; so it goes without saying that Ms. Buck doesn’t exactly live the average teenage life.

Now in its 9th year, United Way’s Ski Day at HoliMont couples great skiing with a great cause. United Way of Cattaraugus County helps to fund organizations like the YMCA, Red Cross, the Special Olympics and many more - so support is always needed. And what better way to do it than with a ski day?  This year’s event is scheduled for Thursday, March 2.

While you were enjoying summer in the States, this former HoliMont Snowboard Team racer was chasing winter in Chile, in preparation for the World Cup circuit / 2018 Olympics

Last winter, SNOWED-IN introduced you to a zealous young woman named Megan Farrell, whose Olympic aspirations in the field of alpine snowboard racing were taking her in a direction that most people in their early twenties never even set their sights on.  Four-time Olympic Gold medalist Jesse Owens once said, “We all have dreams.  But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.”

If you’re a Member at HoliMont (North America’s largest private ski club), you know that it is an experience that can be tough to put into words because it really is just that – an incredible winter experience. Any time throughout the season you can hit the slopes and set your skis on edge to engage your finely tuned, high performance skis or snowboard on pristinely groomed corduroy and carve down one of HoliMont’s 52 slopes. But as with most things in life, picturing it doesn’t do it justice. Until you can actually feel that crisp Western New York winter air on your face as you cruise down a slope, all you can really do is imagine what spending your winters at this family-friendly ski club is all about.

This is going to be a great winter. Farmers, weathermen, Mother Nature and the magic 8 ball all agree that we’re going to see better snowfall this season.

Just twenty-three years old, an age where most young people are just a couple years into the job force or pursuing higher education, Megan Farrell’s Olympic dreams currently consume her everyday life. A graduate of Queen’s University with a degree in Environmental Science, Megan has put typical career aspirations on hold in order to work out, train, travel, and hone her snowboarding skills. It’s not an easy lifestyle by any means. But true commitment is rarely easy.

Take a moment to be completely honest with yourself, and then answer these two questions: How do you define commitment?  And how old were you when you first realized what true commitment was?

Winter is upon us here in Ellicottville, and HoliMont kicked off the 2015-16 season on December 24.

November 27, 2015

There is a chill in the air of Ellicottville, which is always a welcome feeling this time of year. By the time this publication goes to print, the HoliMont Mountain Crew will most likely have fired up the guns and started to make snow.

IT’S ALMOST TIME TO THE LET 2015-16 SKI SEASON BEGIN!

Already picking out what fresh new gear you want to purchase for the season?  Perhaps you knew the answer to that question months ago.    If so, then you also know that the leaves on the trees of Ellicottville are changing color, which means that it’s almost time for another fantastic season out on the slopes.  And rest assured, HoliMont is looking forward to helping you enjoy every single snow-filled moment this winter.

This month, SNOWED-IN took some time to sit down with the brains and skis behind HoliMont's phenomenal Racing Program.  Meet HoliMont’s Racing Director, Travis Widger, aka “Widg”.  If you’re a local, you might know this fourth generation Elliicottvillian.  And if you are a part of the Racing Program at  HoliMont, you certainly are familiar with him!  Travis and his wife, Laura recently had their first child, Jack Peter Widger, fifth generation, who they hope to have on skis near the end of next season!

If you are not already familiar with HoliMont’s diverse Racing Program (or should I say programs), let me enlighten you. HoliMont has several racing disciplines - from Intraclub Racing which introduces young skiers to the excitement of ski racing, to Adult Racing that is designed to challenge and improve on one’s skiing ability, to competitive programs such as HoliMont’s Junior Alpine Travel Team and Junior Snowboard Team.  Whether you are new to racing or an advanced skier, HoliMont’s Racing Program has something for everybody!

The HoliMont Snowsports Phoenix Program is celebrating its 19th year! With over 40 dedicated volunteers, 25 PSIA certified instructors and many devoted parents, this program has persevered though nearly two decades. If you aren’t already familiar with this phenomenal program, it teaches skiing and snowboarding to adults, youth and children with various disabilities. It offers more than the opportunity to ski or ride, however.  It opens up the world of snowsports and the opportunity to experience passion for POW!

USASA - the United States of America Snowboarding Association - rolled the dice on competitive snowboarding in the 1980s and hasn’t looked back since. The genesis of its vision came about when Chuck Allen wanted an all-encompassing competitive circuit for snowboarding. Now, more than 25 years later, USASA continues to be the dominant competitive organization for amateur snowboarders across the country.

At its roots, snowboarding is not a competitive sport. More of a high five-laden activity you do with your friends than an ultra-competitive one, the feeling of hot laps with a good group is unlike any other. But as the sport has evolved, there’s no way a semblance of competitiveness wasn’t going to bust the door down.

What better way to kickstart the season than by getting to know the people who take care of the hills we love to enjoy?

This month SNOWED-IN is getting personal with HoliMont crew member JC McAuley, seasoned snowmaker / terrain park manager. When JC is not firing up the guns on subzero nights, you might find him around town at his #1 Ellicottville hot spot or crushing some pow on his favorite HoliMont trails …

On Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015 HoliMont will turn the lifts for the annual SkiScape fundraising event.

SkiScape raises money for the Kids Escaping Drugs organization, which was established in 1987 as the Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services Foundation (ADDSF) and then became known as the Kids Escaping Drugs Campaign.  It was created with the sole purpose to raise funds for the creation and support of adolescent treatment facilities in Western New York.

The leaves on the trees surrounding Ellicottville are quickly morphing into a bright orange hue, which can mean only one thing: the winter season will be here before you know it.  Are you already picking out what new gear you want to purchase for the season?  Did you know the answer to that question months ago?  If so, then you must be ready for another fine season on the slopes.  And what better place to break in your new gear than at HoliMont?

In the business for over 30 years, USASA allows regional talent to showcase what they’ve got, with the hopes of qualifying for the main event out west come end of March. SNOWED-IN caught up with one HoliMont Snowboard Team rider who's been to Nationals an unprecedented six years in a row.

After watching this year’s Winter Olympics (and the corresponding behind the scenes look into athletes’ lives) you find yourself in awe of just how aggressively these people are pushing the limits of the human body. Snowboarding - and snowboarders - are training harder than ever before.

March means a lot of things here in Ellicottville. It means the ski season is nearing an end but that it’s nowhere close to being done. Last year, if you will recall, we got close to a foot of powder on March 20. Obviously we’re hoping for a repeat of that this year.

Will it happen? Who knows? But we can always hope! March and April still offer plenty of top notch skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

It’s hard to believe that we’re already into February. January flew by, which just validates the saying “time flies when you’re having fun.” Plenty happened over the month of January.

Art is a pretty subjective topic.  It’s incredibly difficult to define and even harder to produce at a substantial level.  Art can be a painting, a drawing, a poem, a sculpture … the possibilities are really endless.  Art can even be a large slab of wood.  At least, it can be if you put it in the right hands.
