Years ago, two kids who shared a love of everything Winter made a childhood bet. On the T-Bar at Buffalo Ski Club in Colden, NY a frustrated alpine racer took a break from training to go see her friend’s freestyle practice. This racer happened to be me, and one of my favorite things was to watch the aerial team practice as I was enamored with their grace and control in the air. Catching the T-Bar with my friend Matthew DePeters, on the ride up I told him that I would make the Olympics before him ...

Ask anyone who frequents Holiday Valley, and they’ll tell you the Penguin Paddle is an annual favorite event. And how could it not be? The Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, founded in 1982, draws on volunteers to assist those of disability with the joy of skiing. You’ve probably seen them on the hill, smiles plastered on their faces.

Here in Ellicottville, you always hear about the great skiing and snowboarding, but not often do you hear about the advanced programs offered at our local resorts. I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Ellicottville natives Hayly and Logan Fredrickson (twins), two U16 alpine ski racers out of the Holiday Valley Training Center (HVTC).

When the fall colors are in their twilight and we’re knocking on winter’s door, there’s one event at Holiday Valley to bridge the dreaded November gap - the Beer & Wine Festival, presented by Ellicottville Brewing Company, Southern Tier Brewing Company and Holiday Valley. Now in its 13th year, Beer & Wine has become a favorite event for an (ever growing) contingent of fermentation lovers.

Last year, Holiday Valley (and to be completely honest, the entire east coast) were put on a Code Red high alert. When November came along and it was still 80º, no one panicked. Winter would come, fast and furious. But winter didn’t come, and even if you count what we had as winter, it was bad. But props to everyone at Holiday Valley - management, Mountain Ops, instructors, parking attendants … everyone - for keeping calm and weathering the storm (or lack of). Honestly, I still had some really good days on-hill last year. Shoutout to the snowmakers and groomers for saving the day in early January.

Progression. Innovation. Development. Since Holiday Valley’s genesis, these are the nouns we use to describe the resort. Every off-season, it’s all hands on deck - from management, to Mountain Operations, to Food & Beverage - to make a concentrated effort to make an already stellar product even better. When you speak in terms of national recognition, resorts like Snowbird, Mammoth Mountain and Okemo are names you hear often. But you’d be shocked at how many people across the North American continent know, and love, Holiday Valley.

Holiday Valley prides itself on giving its visitors the complete experience - extensive terrain, great snowmaking, fresh groomers every night, lift capacity - and these are such reasons why Ski Magazine ranked HV 3rd Overall for Eastern resorts in 2015. But one facet of the Valley that spans all four seasons is what we do every day - eat and drink.

WINTER CARNIVAL AT HOLIDAY VALLEY

March 12-13

January 29, 2016

Aspire of WNY is proud to celebrate their third annual Ski The Valley event being held at Holiday Valley Resort. While this fundraiser to benefit children and adults with disabilities features activities for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, there are plenty of fun options for everyone who attends. Tubing, live music, a basket raffle, and a meal in a dedicated area of the Main Lodge will be offered.

We all know that even the smallest events can have far reaching consequences. The old adages that stick around the longest tend to have the most truth to them. Don’t believe me? Here’s an example: on March 25, 1945, Sherwood Moss was born to Mr. and Mrs. David Moss. A year-and-a-half later, Sherwood was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. There was almost no assistance for the Moss family as they cared for their son, public welfare not being what it is today. Luckily, Mrs. Mary Moss had a group of friends in the Junior League of Buffalo who wanted to help.

Another winter, another season of progression for the terrain parks at Holiday Valley. With five different spots around the resort that have terrain features installed, we’ve come a long way from when there was a single rail sitting on the middle of Snoozer.

While a severe lack of snow throughout the East Coast left the resort with priority snowmaking in other areas, the park crew has done an admirable job getting its parks up and running in the rail park at the bottom of Mardi Gras, Fiddler’s Elbow and the Riglet Park.

I love skiing, and chances are that if you live here, you love it too. But for some, injuries or disabilities may prevent them from participating. That’s where the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program at Holiday Valley comes in. And the program's biggest fundraiser of the year ... the ever-popular Penguin Paddle races.

There are no days off. Much like snowmaking and grooming at Holiday Valley, the Lift Maintenance crew works early mornings and late nights to ensure the lifts keep spinning. They don’t get a lot of credit, but they deserve it.

Bob Armour steps into his ski boots as Holiday Valley's new Director of Snowsports. Get to know him in our one-on-one interview.

“The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new” - Socrates

Transition is an inevitable aspect of life.  Eventually, everything changes.  And over the summer at Holiday Valley Resort, a substantial change took place.  Ron Kubicki, Holiday Valley’s Director of Snowsports for nearly the past two decades, retired from the snowsports school that he had helped build into one of the top ski schools in New York state.

Gowanda Harley-Davidson will take over Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville, NY on Saturday, Jan. 23 for Harley-Day Valley 2016. This one-day event is fully dedicated to learning how to ski, how to ride, and just getting out of the house for the biggest cabin fever party of the season.

Usually, when I write these articles, I’ll lead in with my past experience with the event, or try to somehow relate it back to myself. It’s a system that’s worked well so far (I hope). However, I’ll level with you. I know diddly squat about bikes, and I think you’d see through me if I tried to tell you otherwise. On the other hand, skiing is something I know a good deal about and that aspect alone is enough to sell me on this event. So without further ado, here are the hard-hitting facts about Harley-Day Valley 2016.

Besides powder, there is no better feeling than ripping through fresh corduroy when the resort starts spinning its lifts in the morning. Whether it’s fresh snow or manmade, the groomers couple machine with execution to deliver that perfect manicure on the hill. Much like the snowmakers, grooming is a job that requires long nights on the front lines.

Last month, we gave you an inside look at Holiday Valley’s snowmaking crew. Our next feature showcases another integral part of keeping skiers and snowboarders happy - the groomers.

It’s a job that doesn’t get nearly as much credit as it deserves. Snowmaking is a tough business. It’s cold, it’s labor-intensive and oft-times can be dangerous. But every winter, Holiday Valley’s crew is out on the front lines, giving us the best snow they can.

But every winter, Holiday Valley’s crew is out on the front lines, giving us the best snow they can. Dan Aldrich has made snow for over 20 years. The Ellicottville native’s roots are firmly entrenched in the resort’s snowmaking operations, and he’s seen the evolution of manmade and its impact on the overall vibe of the resort.

CANCELED! On Saturday, Dec. 19 at Holiday Valley, Demo Day will kick off in full swing. The atmosphere it creates is unique – a small commune of like-minded skiers and boarders all feeding off each other’s positive energy and stoke. Over twenty ski and snowboard reps from major brands will be present this year, including Elan, Volkl, Atomic, Rossignol, Salomon, Head, K2, Mervin Manufacturing (Lib Tech, GNU and Roxy), and Burton - to name a few.

CANCELED!  Buyer’s remorse has got to be in my top ten list of worst feelings of all time. I’m stingy at the best of times, so ruefully staring at my latest mistake, asking “Why did I buy this?” will put me in a funk for at least a day or two. The mourning period lasts longer in direct proportion to two things: how much money I spent on it, and how often I use it. This is no doubt true for most of you out there. Remorse over a pack of gum could last a minute, but a bad purchase of let’s say, a car, will likely haunt you to your grave.
