Begin the month with a visit to a museum, enjoy a Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration at a local tavern in mid-month, then sweetly slide from March into April enjoying the sugary taste of this year’s maple syrup. Hopefully by the beginning of April you will be outside in the sunshine teeing off at a local golf course!

Winter can be an enchanting season, especially in the mountains of Western New York. With all there is to see and do, and with the holidays quickly approaching, there’s shopping to start, decorating to do, and parties to plan. Fortunately, help is on the way, and there are many little historic gems in towns across the county to help you fill your home with holiday cheer, stuff the stockings and, perhaps, stop for a breathe of fresh air.

It’s safe to say if you’re reading this publication, you’re well aware of the ski resort prowess Holiday Valley and HoliMont bring to the table. Both are pioneers in their respective categories (public/private resorts), which continue to re-invest in their properties and the community.

It’s safe to say if you’re reading this publication, you’re well aware of the ski resort prowess Holiday Valley and HoliMont bring to the table. Both are pioneers in their respective categories (public/private resorts), which continue to re-invest in their properties and the community of Ellicottville annually. But, should you find yourself visiting town in the ‘off-season’, you don’t need to worry about finding something to do.

The Red Bull Butter Cup snowboard series hit the streets of Buffalo, NY the evening of Feb. 11 as part of Buffalo’s Winterfest Powder Keg Festival in the heart of Niagara Square. Crews hammered away at scaffolding and dropped 10 tons of fluffy, manmade snow onto the capital building’s front steps. Holiday Valley’s 42/78 Park Crew was on location to set the course.

The robins may be back, but there’s still plenty of cold-weather fun ahead as winter glides into spring. Crush the spring ski slopes, learn about living the old-fashioned way, navigate swift waters, motorcycle along pretty country roads, win a high stakes game and relax at a peaceful spa. Welcome to Cattaraugus County - we’re so glad you’re here!

Typically, the month of March is a celebration of everything green. Here, in the lush greenness of the Allegheny National Forest Region - just 30 minutes south of Ellicottville - we celebrate green every day.

During springtime in the Allegheny National Forest, everything starts to come back to life - the trees start to awaken, songbirds come back to fill the air with music, plus wildflowers and leeks start to peep through the earth. Spring is a great time to be in the ANF Region when residents and visitors alike celebrate the leek - or ramp.

The snow sports industry is tough to figure out. We’re barely three weeks into winter (if you can even call it winter) and local shops are already starting their buying cycles for next season.

SIA (SnowSports Industries America) is the national medium between companies and buyers. It plans and promotes trade shows where shop owners can go and view each company’s product a year in advance. For the past few years, the regional mid-Atlantic show has been held in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Once a barber on Route 5 in Hamburg, Jack Quavis now enjoys the life of a ski bum with sponsors. He is the creator of http://EVLRocks.com, a website devoted to the Ellicottville lifestyle. Quavis started the website six years ago as a hobby; taking photos of everything and everyone Ellicottville and sharing them on his website. Now Quavis is touring New York State exhibiting every ski resort and area in it, the same way he has Ellicottville.

Desiring to promote the western sections of Cattaraugus County, New York, the Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism hired Roger Brooks, CEO of Destination Development, to assess the area from Gowanda to Randolph and to make recommendations for marketing this “corridor.” What Brooks found there enthralled him as he was immersed in a completely different way of life. This area piqued his interest as few other areas have because of the pastoral setting and the simple ways and beliefs of the Amish people that live there.

Straight out of Bradford, PA, Homewood Snowboards will be making their debut on the mountain and in the Ellicottville scene this winter with their new snowboard manufacturing company. With Bradford being a mere 30 minutes south of Ellicottville, I found it necessary to get the down-low on these guys and their products. I tracked down Co-Owner, Shop Manager and long-time acquaintance Ryan Williamson for a little “up close and personal” Q&A session:
